About Durham Mavericks Baseball Club

The Durham Mavericks Baseball Club is a premier baseball organization in the prestigious Fergie Jenkins Showcase League (FJSL), proudly representing the Durham Region of Ontario, Canada. Established in 2023, the Mavericks bring together talented players from across the GTA, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Uxbridge, Scarborough, Markham, and surrounding communities.

At the heart of the Mavericks is a commitment to player development, family culture, and competitive excellence. Our core values — working hard, having fun, and being great teammates — help shape not only skilled baseball players on the diamond, but also confident, respectful, and resilient young individuals off the field.

We believe youth sports should always be player-first. Whether an athlete dreams of playing baseball at the college or university level, competing at an elite level, or simply becoming the best version of themselves through sport, our focus remains the same — their growth, development, and success. As former MLB player and manager Mike Matheny said:

“Sports should be about kids and their passion, not about parents and their goals.”

This philosophy is deeply embedded in the Maverick Way.

We foster a family-first environment and encourage parents and guardians to be active members of the organization through volunteering, fundraising, sponsorship support, and cheering on our athletes every step of the way. Families can feel confident knowing our coaches are committed to mentoring, teaching, and supporting every player to help them succeed both on and off the field.

Leadership and accountability are also central to our development model. Players are encouraged to grow as leaders through team warmups, communication, and post-game discussions where athletes reflect on performance, celebrate successes, and identify areas for improvement. We teach players to take ownership, support their teammates, and compete with confidence.

Our coaching staff is carefully selected and held to the highest standards of professionalism, sportsmanship, and baseball knowledge. Coaches are expected to lead by example, demonstrate respect toward players, parents, officials, and opponents, and provide every athlete with the tools needed to thrive in both baseball and life.

From October through May, the Mavericks offer an extensive off-season development program utilizing specialized training facilities throughout Durham Region. Training includes:

⚾ Batting cage sessions and bullpens
⚾ Fielding, positional, and situational development
⚾ Indoor winter training and advanced baseball instruction
⚾ Optional strength and athletic performance programs for older players
⚾ Classroom sessions focused on baseball IQ, mental preparation, health, wellness, and leadership development

We believe developing the complete athlete means focusing on both physical and mental growth, helping players build habits that contribute to long-term success in sport and in life.

As proud members of the Fergie Jenkins Showcase League, our regular season runs from May through August, with playoffs beginning in August. Teams compete in doubleheaders on weekends and travel across Southern Ontario, with league opponents ranging from Ottawa to London. The Mavericks proudly host home games throughout Durham Region.

In addition to league play, the organization aims to participate in 3–4 U.S. tournaments annually between March and July, providing players with high-level competition, unforgettable experiences, and opportunities to represent both the Mavericks and Canada on an international stage. Tournament schedules are discussed during the off-season to give families time to prepare, while fundraising and sponsorship initiatives help offset travel costs.
