The Durham Mavericks Baseball Club is based in Durham Region, Ontario, with players coming from Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Uxbridge, Scarborough, Markham, and beyond.
Our core values — working hard, having fun, and being great teammates — guide everything we do. These principles not only help our players develop into skilled baseball players, but also shape them into well-rounded, resilient individuals off the field.
We believe youth sports must always be about the players. Whether a player dreams of competing at the collegiate level or simply strives to be the best athlete they can be before moving on to life’s next chapter, they remain our top priority. As former MLB player and manager Mike Matheny said, “Sports should be about kids and their passion, not about parents and their goals.” At the Mavericks, we take that philosophy seriously.
Family & Community Involvement
We actively encourage families to be part of the Mavericks community — through volunteering, fundraising, and cheering on the players at games. Parents can enjoy watching their children knowing our coaches are dedicated to supporting every player’s growth.
From pre-game warmups, where players take turns leading, to post-game huddles where athletes share reflections and highlights, we focus on building leadership, teamwork, and confidence at every opportunity.
Coaching & Player Development
Our coaches and staff are carefully selected and held to the highest standards of professionalism, knowledge, and respect. They lead by example, mentor players both on and off the field, and ensure that each athlete has the tools to succeed in baseball and in life.
During the off-season (October to May), training takes place at multiple specialized facilities across Durham Region. We focus on all aspects of the game:
-
Batting practice & bullpens at dedicated batting cages
-
Fielding, positional & situational drills in large indoor spaces
-
Optional fitness training with certified personal trainers for older teams, to improve strength and athleticism
-
Classroom sessions on situational plays, health, and wellness — emphasizing both the mental and physical sides of the game
Season & Competition
As proud members of the Fergie Jenkins Showcase League (FJSL), our season runs from May through August, with playoffs in late summer. Teams play weekend doubleheaders across southern Ontario, with league opponents stretching as far east as Ottawa and as far west as Windsor.
The Mavericks’ home base is Durham Region, hosting games on local diamonds. In addition to league play, our teams typically participate in 3–4 U.S. tournaments between March and July. Tournament schedules are finalized during the off-season, giving families time to plan. To help offset travel costs, all families are expected to contribute to fundraising and sponsorship initiatives.
